Why learn Korean?

• Although Korean is not really a world language, it is a very important Asian language, and it is spoken by quite large communities here in New Zealand.
• Korean companies have achieved worldwide prominence in fields such as car production, manufacturing and electronics, and many of these companies are represented here in New Zealand.
• Korea is not widely known as a tourist destination, but it has a rich and ancient culture, quite distinct from those of Japan and China, and people who have visited Korea have been impressed by the places of historical and artistic interest; it is also very diverse scenically.
• Korea has its own distinctive cuisine, also completely different from those of Japan and China.
• Korean cities are bustling places quite unlike New Zealand cities; they are great for shopping, with opportunities ranging from huge department stores to colourful street markets.
• A lot of opportunities exist for Kiwis to go and work in Korea, especially as English teachers. There is a working holiday scheme with Korea for people under the age of 30. A knowledge of the Korean language before you go will be of great benefit.
• Many New Zealanders will have had Korean students staying in their homes. Now is the opportunity to find out more about their language and culture!
• Kiwis are quite likely to find themselves living next to or working with Koreans, and may well form friendships with Korean people; some may have Korean partners.

    This is an interactive, live course delivered via Google Classroom/Google Meet. A first taste of the Korean language, this course is for complete beginners. No previous knowledge of the language is required. By the end of this course, you will already know enough to get by in Korean: you will be able to cope with the most common everyday situations by asking and answering simple questions, and you will be able to understand people when they speak to you about the situations covered.

    This course is online via Google Classroom. This course follows our beginner’s course or assumes previous basic knowledge of the language, (for example, self-introductions, talking about your family, names of foods, shopping, asking for directions, etc.)

    By the end of this course, you will be able to refer to future and past events in Korean and describe some of these in sequence; your range of Korean vocabulary will have increased to include some areas outside the everyday.

So what’s involved if you want to learn Korean … and is it hard?!

  • The Korean language is not closely related to any other language, although some of the grammar is a little similar to that of Japanese.
  • There are a number of dialects of Korean, but the language of Seoul, which is regarded as the standard, is widely used and understood everywhere.
  • The basics of Korean are not very difficult to learn, and you will find that you can quite easily express a number of everyday concepts.  An introductory course will also present many aspects of Korean culture. 
  • Korean pronunciation is not that hard; it doesn’t have the tone system which can be tricky in Chinese.
  • Korean is written in its own unique system called Hangul; this is much more straightforward than the writing systems of Chinese or Japanese.  However, it is in any case possible to learn some of the spoken language without worrying about the writing; you can use our letters to represent Korean sounds.
  • Like Japanese, Korean has different levels of politeness, but you will learn to use a form which is widely accepted.
  • As you proceed with your study of Korean, you will see that it does work very differently from English, and there are a number of new concepts to become familiar with.  If you can persevere, you will acquire a feel for the language and will find your progress enormously rewarding!
